The Lynchburg area is always surprising me with its constant change and novelty. Today however, I learned some interesting facts about the noble history of the region.

I was a bit confused when I saw that the NATIONAL D-Day Memorial is situated in Bedford...seems a bit random? But actually, Bedford county lost more of its men in the D-Day invasion than any other county in the US. Those soldiers are affectionately known as the "Bedford Boys," and the memorial beautifully honors their sacrifice, among the other heroes who risked their lives for our freedom in World War II.

The memorial is breathtaking in both size and gravity. Apparently, there are over 400 plaques available to read. I would therefore recommend taking the guide tour (free upon admission); you would miss so much without a guide and may end up aimlessly wandering. The tours leave from the gift shop on the half-hour.

Some highlights of the tour include the plaza dedicated to every soldier who lost his life in the invasion...over 4,000 men. Each name is inscribed on metallic plaques, forming a sobering rotunda. The beach memorial is also deeply moving, with statues of the Bedford Boys and Rangers courageously advancing to enemy lines.

This particular monument is full of interesting historical symbolism. You tour guide can provide you with the full experience.

In July, the memorial hosts a 1940s Hometown Festival, with WW II era singers, exhibits and actors. Local artisans are also present, as well as a few food trucks. Even better, students and veterans are admitted for FREE. Check their website mid-July to get specific dates.

The memorial really does feel like it should be among the other monuments in Washington, D.C.; it's incredible to have such an important piece of history right in the area. More so, the National D-Day Memorial will leave you with a new appreciation for those fearless men who gave the ultimate price for our freedom.
